Jan 14, 2014 Changing Faces is urging people to sign a petition to force Moshi makers Mind Candy to change the name of some of their evil characters. Moshi Monsters should not.
A leading disfigurement charity is claiming victory in its year-long campaign against some characters in the children’s online series ‘Moshi Monsters’, after the product’s decline led the developers Mind Candy to launch a different range of products aimed at children.
Changing Faces objected to Moshi Monsters for giving the nasty characters names such as ‘Freak Face’, ‘Fish Lips, and ‘Bruiser’ – and describing them in stereotypical ways like ‘an icky one-eyed blob of badness’ (Fish Lips).
The charity – which supports people with conditions, scars or injuries that affect their appearance – said that the characters’ names would lead to more playground bullying and would counter efforts being put into ‘Anti Bullying Week’, also taking place this week.
The campaign was backed by thousands of Changing Faces supporters who signed a petition and more than a dozen MPs who signed a House of Commons Early Day Motion condemning the products.
Speaking a year ago today, to launch the campaign, Chief Executive of Changing Faces, Dr James Partridge OBE, said: “Actions make people or characters evil not scars, marks or asymmetric features.
For far too long, disfigurement has been a lazy shortcut for the entertainment industry to suggest that a character or person is evil. Mind Candy has fallen into the same trap by using outdated, unfounded and offensive descriptions of common disfigurements to emphasize the evilness of the Glumps, the Moshi Monster baddies.”
Last week Mind Candy announced a £2.2m loss in 2013 blamed on falling revenues from the Moshi Monsters series. The company’s turnover fell almost 35% between 2012 and 2013.
“We are most definitely not anti-business nor killjoys, and we don’t want to see any company decline. But the fact remains that the Moshi Monsters’ Glumps Family members are offensive in both name and design, and we hope it’s been a lesson for Mind Candy,” said Dr Partridge.
“In future, when creative developers are working on a new product for children, I’d urge them to sit back and think: how might this product affect children’s behaviour? Might it encourage nastiness or bullying? If the answer is anything close to ‘possibly’, then they should be going straight back to the drawing board.”
This week Changing Faces has launched a series of online resources for teachers to mark Anti Bullying Week, which this year focuses on children with ‘Special Education Needs and/or Disabilities’.
Petpet Park had been set to closing down it's doors for Jumpstart since September 18th 2014. Since it's bought by Jumpstart, Petpet Park is shutting down it's doors! (well i heard Jumpstart doesn't directly bought Petpet Park but still this is a bit disturbing somehow..)
And i heard my friend just contacted Neopets/Jumpstart (TNT) to reopen Petpet Park, but they can't except if we have many supporters and players who want it back on social medias. Which is WHY I MADE THIS PETITION ! Let's Make the petition reach the GOALLLLL!! i think 10k signs/supports would make TNT (The Neopets Team)/Jumpstart change their mind and reopen petpet park.
